Coincidentally, World Tourism Day 2020 falls on the same day that Ethiopians Celebrate Meskel, UNESCO registered intangible heritage. This year’s World Tourism Day is going to be special in the sense that countries celebrate it in the face of COVID-19 pandemic when there is no still clear pathway to revive the sector struggling to breath.

Designated as the Year of Tourism and Rural Development by UNWTO, the 2020 official celebration will be hosted by a group of countries rather than a single country for a first time- signifying the need to international solidarity and cooperation at this difficult period.

In line with Tourism and Rural Development theme and recognizing the tourism sector’s unique ability to provide opportunities outside of big cities, preparation is underway for Ethiopia to celebrate World Tourism Day 2020 in Jigjiga- the capital city of the Somali regional state for a 33rd times in the country.
