At a time when the International Air Transport Association, IATA, is calling for the development and deployment of rapid, accurate, affordable, easy-to-operate, scalable and systematic COVID-19 testing for all passengers before departure as an alternative to quarantine measures in order to re-establish global air connectivity, Ethiopian authorities abandoned the quarantine requirement imposed for almost 6 months if travellers come with a medical certificate with a negative PCR COVID-19 test result that has been issued no more than 5 days(120 hrs) prior to arrival.

Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ethiopia and Tourism Ethiopia, the Land of Origins brand Promotor, announced the parliament’s decision to reopen the border for tourism and sporting events in their respective facebook pages.
Tourists are welcomed through all entry points starting from 23rd September 2020.
As the rate of positive cases shows a modest decline while the number of total testing scaled up, Ethiopia is now convinced to restart the tourism sector with a strict enforcement of the travel safety guidelines and protocols as recommended by UNWTO and WTTC.

As much as is the case in other countries, toursim suffers much in Ethiopia as well due to the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic and the economic cost will be huge if the status quo is allowed to prevail for longer.
The economic cost of the breakdown in global connectivity makes investing in a border-opening testing solution a priority for governments; the human suffering and global economic pain of the crisis will be prolonged if the aviation industry—on which at least 65.5 million jobs depend—collapses before the pandemic ends.

There is a lot of optimizim that the additional tourism sites recently opened in and arround Addis Ababa, the capital, and most of the travel destinations away from the urban centers could be ideal locations to reopen the tourism secctor and help restore it back to business in Ethopia faster.
