Epiphany, locally known as Timkat, is one of the holiest religious holidays in Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It represents the baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ in the river Jordan in the hands of John the Baptist and is being celebrated across the country starting from Ketera on 19 January 2020.
The celebration will continue today and tomorrow where it will come to a close following the return of the Saint Mickael Tabot.
The celebartion is significant in Gonder where a large mass of delegation and partcipants are in attendance. This year’s Timket celebaration is taking place for the firts time since the holiday has been recognized as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
